Tempest Episode 1-3 With English Subtitles

Basic Setup

  • Tempest is a spy / political-thriller with romance, written by Jeong Seo-kyeong, directed by Kim Hee-won & Heo Myung-haeng.

  • Main characters:

    • Seo Mun-ju (Jun Ji-hyun): a former UN ambassador / diplomat, with a strong moral compass and international experience.

    • Baek (Paik) San-ho (Gang Dong-won): a mysterious mercenary / agent, with a hidden past; becomes Mun-ju’s protector/ally.

    • Jang Jun-ik (Park Hae-joon): Mun-ju’s husband, presidential candidate, later assassinated.

    • Other supporting players: President Chae Kyung-sin, Ok-seon, Jun-sang (Jun-ik’s brother), Anders Miller (a U.S. diplomat), Park Chang-hee, Kang Han-na, etc.

  • Tempest Episode 1-3 With English Subtitles   Mun-ju unexpectedly resigns from her diplomatic post (as an ambassador) and returns home/supports her husband Jun-ik, who is running for president.

  • At a church service (a mass), there is a political protest outside. Inside, Jun-ik is shot and killed by Sergeant Kim Yong-jun. Mun-ju is also targeted, but San-ho intervenes and stops the shot. The assassin swallows a pill and dies.

  • At a subsequent family dinner, Jun-ik’s brother Jun-sang asserts he should take over in the political field, but Mun-ju’s mother-in-law Ok-seon opposes that, suggesting Mun-ju should succeed (perhaps through widow succession).

  • Tempest Episode 3 Jun Ji Hyun Kang Dong won {ENG SUB} 2
  • Mun-ju learns Jun-ik had arranged a lawyer to leave all his assets to her, leaving nothing to his mother or grandmother. This causes tension and suspicion in the family.

  • San-ho is approached by some group to monitor Mun-ju / report on her, but he refuses. He seems interested in her, though. Later, Mun-ju is chased by unknown pursuers; San-ho rescues her. They go to the mountains to talk. In the mountains they uncover that Jun-sang had some connection to the sergeant before the assassination, and that the sergeant’s last words claimed he’d killed “the spy.” Implication: there is suspicion that Jun-ik was alleged to be a spy (for North Korea).

  • The episode ends with Jun-sang sending men to track Mun-ju and San-ho in the mountains.

  • The episode opens with a flashback: Anderson Miller (U.S. diplomat / character) writes a letter to Jun-ik before the assassination.

  • Mun-ju investigates her husband’s schedule, his calls, who he met; she asks aide Park Chang-hee about extra security, personal calls, etc. Some odd clues: a “squirrel” tailing Jun-ik, etc.

  •  Father Yang gives San-ho a protective pendant (St. Anthony).

  • Mun-ju meets Jun-sang. Jun-sang admits he had followed Jun-ik before the assassination, labeling him a spy, and warns that exposing a presidential candidate as a spy could trigger war.

  • Father Yang had a message/letter from Jun-ik: the letter reveals that the U.S. discovered a new nuclear submarine project in North Korea, and had sought Jun-ik’s cooperation.

  •  The President claims Jun-ik aligned with the U.S. merely to gain leverage; the accusation of “spy” is part of political smear.

  • Mun-ju offers Ok-seon a deal: persuade Jun-sang to release Min-ji (her assistant) in exchange for Jun-sang withdrawing his candidacy and leaving the country within 24 hours; she promises to return all of Jun-ik’s assets if Ok-seon helps.

Episode 3

  • Mun-ju visits Mr. Im, who had been advising Jun-ik; Jun-ik had asked him to oversee a reunification initiative. Mun-ju appeals to him for strategy / guidance.

  • Ok-seon works to remove Jun-sang from the primary race / the candidacy. Mun-ju continues campaign preparations.

  • Mun-ju travels (or campaigns) to places like Gwangju, memorial sites, National Cemetery, then to Seoul.

  • That evening Mun-ju gives a campaign speech vowing peaceful reunification; the crowd reacts positively.

  • Later, San-ho asks Mun-ju to make him her bodyguard officially. There’s growing trust / connection between them.

  • Episode 3 ends with a missile launch at sea (ominous sign that the political / military tension escalates).

Episodes 4-5 and What We Can Expect (Based on Previews / Reports)

  • Known / expected developments from these episodes include:

    • Mun-ju’s investigation deepens; more revelations about Jun-ik’s secret life.

    • San-ho continues protecting Mun-ju, but there is increasing distrust around him from those around Mun-ju (such as Chang-hee) because of his secretive behavior.

    • Mun-ju discovers that Jun-ik had a secret second marriage (to Kang Han-na) and had a child. This adds complexity to inheritance, political legitimacy, and also emotional conflict.

    • The U.S. is moving strategic assets near the Korean Peninsula (military tension), raising the stakes significantly. Also possible involvement of arms lobbyists, foreign interests, etc.

    • There is also an escalation of threats to Mun-ju’s safety: attempts on her life continue; San-ho and Mun-ju work together more tightly. Romantic tension builds.

What We Don’t Know Yet

  • More political fallout over the spy accusations, legal battles over inheritance and Jun-ik’s assets.

  • Likely more territory into international relations: U.S. involvement, possibly North Korea’s reaction, military / intelligence stakes.

  • More threats to Mun-ju: assassination attempts, betrayal by those close to her, public presentation vs private danger.

  • Climax toward the end: exposing conspiracies, who the mastermind is behind the assassination and spy allegations, perhaps a big action / diplomatic resolution.
